Engaging More Deeply With Scripture: A general approach

One way to engage more deeply with the Sunday readings is to take the following general approach:

Monday

  • Look up and read each passage in your Bible. Read the surrounding context as well as any verses left out of the lectionary.
  • Make a note of any words, phrases, or images that stand out.
  • Write down any questions that come up as to the meaning or application of the passages.

Tuesday

  • Reread the Old Testament passage in your Bible, paying attention to words, phrases, and images that strike you.
  • Read the Old Testament passage from the lectionary, noting especially where words or sentence structures have been adapted for proclamation.
  • Read the passage in an unfamiliar translation.
  • Read my commentary on the passage.

Wednesday

  • Repeat Day 2 with the New Testament passage.

Thursday

  • Repeat Day 2 with the Gospel passage.

Friday

  • Make connections:
    • What connections do you see among the readings themselves?
    • What connections are there between the readings and the current liturgical season?
    • What words, phrases, and images stood out to you from the readings, and what connections are there between them and the context of your life?
  • Ponder the questions posed in my commentary.

Sunday

  • Think about the homily and how it enlightens and expands on what you have studied and learned.
  • How will what you have learned affect your coming week?
  • Is there some action you need to take or a concrete change you want to make?
