In 17th century France, a man had a spiritual awakening which led him to enter a Carmelite monastery near Paris. His name became Brother Lawrence and he spent the majority of his life in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning up. He lived, always, aware of the presence of God. For Brother Lawrence, the kitchen was a place just as holy as the chapel because God was there. Here is my favorite translation of his teachings, The Practice of the Presence of God.
This month, as you sit with the Sunday scripture readings, let them invite you into an awareness of God in the midst of daily life. Seek to encounter God not just at church and in the liturgy. but in something as simple as washing the dishes or putting away the laundry.
